Marlin Hemlock is a Seneca Indian from the Iroquois Confederacy in upstate New York and Canada. He is married to Santa Clara potter, Phyllis Hemlock. Together, they create both sgraffito and deep carved pottery of high quality. Marlin’s ancestors maintained a tradition of pottery making. They had an interesting way of applying designs - by carving the design elements into wooden paddles which then were impressed into the clay. They also made round pots with square necks. However, Marlin’s style of pottery is very much in the Santa Clara tradition. He simply is a talented designer. He and his wife have a fine eye for detail and finish work. In our opinion, they are young masters who are largely undiscovered because they do not exhibit in the major shows.
