Ethel Vigil of Santa Clara Pueblo

Ethel Vigil, b. 1950

“I take great pride in putting out quality pieces. I sign them, and what I have my name on I want to be proud of. I take great pride in doing the work. It’s a money-making thing, but it’s also a handed- down art that we learn. I do the red and the black carved pottery I learned on my own. My mother Mida Tafoya did it, and I watched her. I picked it up because I was interested. My work is different from my mother’s. I’m trying to teach my four daughters, but the patience isn’t there for them yet.”
